Adrian May
ADRIAN MAY: CAN’T QUITE STOP SINGING...
is his first album available to the public for … ages! Adrian’s last commercial release, his third, was in the 80s. This was the cassette album Hearts and Flyovers. Since then he has continued to write and perform his songs, albeit with a lower profile, both solo and, in the past, with Spring Chickens and Metric Foot, and in his on-going duo with Elaine Barker.
Along the way he has produced three home-made albums to share with friends and fellow musicians. CAN’T QUITE STOP SINGING is then, strictly speaking, his seventh album, but it is the first available from new for free, via the Potiphar’s Apprentices website.
His usual mix of comic and serious songs, on guitar and uke, is here, but the different element of the new songs is that many are unaccompanied. Inspired by working on traditional songs, this album comes with the warning: WARNING: Eight out of fifteen songs here are in the old, popular, necessary, unaccompanied style! Adrian says: ‘My mates seem to like it anyway – try Unloveable (accompanied) and Making Good (unaccompanied), or Sue Cubbin from Potiphar’s Apprentices singing on Making It Right as tasters …’ Anyone who would prefer a hard copy of the album should send a stamped addressed jiffy bag, containing a blank CDR to Adrian May, Literature Dept., Essex University, CO4 3SQ.
Watch out also for Adrian’s book of poems:
An Essex Attitude (Wivenbooks, September 2009)
and book on myth and creativity:
The Self-Renewing Song (Pearson Education, due out April 2010)
